HAWAII – MARYLAND
We have traveled a lot throughout the US and have actually been to 41 of the 50 States. Thus I decided to share some information about each state as well as the state road sign. If we didn’t get to a state sign yet (or forgot to get one while we were there), I have posted another picture of a state sign and will replace it once we have pictures. In the meantime, please enjoy the information on the states from Hawaii-Maryland. FYI, these are in alphabetical order.
State of Hawaii
The Flag of Hawaii was designed at the request of King Kamehameha I. It has eight stripes of white, red, and blue that represent the eight main islands. The flag of Great Britain is emblazoned in the upper left corner to honor Hawaii’s friendship with the British. The combination of the stripes of the United States flag and the Union Jack of Great Britain is said to have pleased the merchant shippers of both nations. Flag adopted for official state use in 1959
Hawaii was the 50th state to join the union.
It was settled in 1820 and entered the union on Aug. 21, 1959.
The state capitol is in Honolulu.
Their nickname is: The Aloha State
Their motto is: The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness
Origin of state’s name: Could be based on native Hawaiian word for homeland, “Owhyhee”
State of Idaho
A silk flag, blue field, five feet six inches fly, and four feet four inches on a pike, bordered with gilt fringe two and one-half inches in width, with the state seal of Idaho twenty-one inches in diameter, in colors, in the center of a blue field. The woman represents liberty, justice, and equality. The man is a miner. The pictures on the shield represent the main industries of forestry, farming, and mining. The cornucopias is a symbol of abundance. The elks head represents wildlife. The words “State of Idaho” are embroidered in with block letters, two inches in height on a red band three inches in width by twenty-nine inches in length, the band being in gold and placed about eight and one-half inches from the lower border of fringe and parallel with the same. Flag adopted 1907.
Idaho was the 41st state to join the union.
It was settled in 1842 and entered the union on July 3, 1890.
The state capitol is in Boise.
Their nickname is: The Gem State
Their motto is: It is forever
Origin of state’s name: Idaho is a coined or invented word, and is not a derivation of an Indian phrase “E Dah Hoe (How)” supposedly meaning “gem of the mountains.”
State of Illinois
The Illinois flag is a simple representation of the Great Seal of Illinois against a white background. In 1969, the General Assembly voted to add the word “ILLINOIS” under the Great Seal of the flag. The State’s name was added to the flag to ensure that people not familiar with the Great Seal of Illinois would still recognize the banner. Flag adopted in 1915.
Illinois was the 21st state to join the union.
It was settled in 1720 and entered the union on Dec. 3, 1818.
The state capitol is in Springfield.
Their nickname is: The Prairie State
Their motto is: State Sovereignty, National Union
Origin of state’s name: Algonquin Indian for “warriors”
State of Indiana
The flags dimensions shall be three feet fly by two feet hoist; or five feet fly by three feet hoist; or any size proportionate to either of those dimensions. The field of the flag shall be blue with nineteen stars and a flaming torch in gold or buff. Thirteen stars shall be arranged in an outer circle, representing the original thirteen states; five stars shall be arranged in a half circle below the torch and inside the outer circle of stars, representing the states admitted prior to Indiana; and the nineteenth star, appreciably larger than the others and representing Indiana shall be placed above the flame of the torch. The outer circle of stars shall be so arranged that one star shall appear directly in the middle at the top of the circle, and the word “Indiana” shall be placed in a half circle over and above the star representing Indiana and midway between it and the star in the center above it. Rays shall be shown radiating from the torch to the three stars on each side of the star in the upper center of the circle. Flag adopted 1917
Indiana was the 19th state to join the union.
It was settled in 1787 and entered the union on Dec. 11, 1816.
The state capitol is in Indianapolis.
Their nickname is: The Hoosier State
Their motto is: Crossroads of America
Origin of state’s name: Latin for “Land of the Indians”
State of Iowa
Having three vertical stripes blue, white and red the Iowa flag resembles the flag of France. On the white stripe is a bald eagle carrying a blue streamer in its beak. The state motto “Our Liberties We Prize, and Our Rights We will Maintain” is written on the streamer. The name of the state is emblazoned in red letters. Flag was adopted in 1921
Iowa was the 29th state to join the union.
It was settled in 1788 and entered the union on Dec. 28, 1846.
The state capitol is in Des Moines.
Their nickname is: The Hawkeye State
Their motto is: Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain
Origin of state’s name: From the Iowa River which was named after the Ioway Indian tribe
State of Kansas
On a navy blue field is a sunflower, the state flower. Also, the state seal and the words “Kansas”. In the picture of the state, the seal is thirty-four stars representing the order of statehood. Above the stars is the motto “To the Stars Through Difficulties”. On the seal a sunrise overshadows a farmer plowing a field near his log cabin, a steamboat sailing the Kansas River, a wagon train heading west, and Native Americans hunting bison.
Flag adopted in 1927
Kansas was the 34th state to join the union.
It was settled in 1737 and entered the union on Jan. 29, 1861.
The state capitol is in Topeka.
Their nickname is: The Sunflower State
Their motto is: To the stars through difficulties
Origin of state’s name: From the Sioux Indian for “south wind people”
State of Kentucky
Placed on a navy blue field is the seal and words “Commonwealth of Kentucky”. The two friends shaking hands, a pioneer and a statesman, represent all the people. They are acting out the meaning of Kentucky’s motto: “United We Stand; Divided We Fall”. Sprays of the state flower {goldenrod} extend in a half-circle around the picture. Flag adopted 1918 amended in 1928 & 1962.
Kentucky was the 15th state to join the union.
It was settled in 1774 and entered the union on June 1, 1792.
The state capitol is in Frankfort.
Their nickname is: The Bluegrass State
Their motto is: United we stand, divided we fall
Origin of state’s name: Based on the Iroquois Indian word Ken-tah-ten meaning “land of tomorrow”
State of Louisiana
The design consists of the pelican group from the state seal, in white and gold, and a white ribbon bearing the state motto, “Union, Justice, and Confidence”, on a field of a solid blue. Flag adopted 1912.
Louisiana was the 18th state to join the union.
It was settled in 1682 and entered the union on April 30, 1812.
The state capitol is in Baton Rouge.
Their nickname is: The Pelican State
Their motto is: Union, Justice, and Confidence
Origin of state’s name: Named in honor of France’s King Louis XIV
State of Maine
The state coat of arms is placed on a blue field. In the center of the shield, a moose rests under a tall pine tree. A farmer and seaman represent the work that people did in early times. The North Star represents the state motto:
“Dirigo” (“I Direct”). Flag adopted 1909
Maine was the 23rd state to join the union.
It was settled in 1607 and entered the union on March 15, 1820.
The state capitol is in Augusta.
Their nickname is: The Pine Tree State
Their motto is: Dirigo – Latin for I Direct
Origin of state’s name: Assumed to be a reference to the state region being a mainland, different from its many surrounding islands
State of Maryland
The Maryland flag contains the family crest of the Calvert and Crossland families. Maryland was founded as an English colony in 1634 by Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore. The black and Gold designs belong to the Calvert family. The red and white design belongs to the Crossland family. Flag adopted 1904.
Maryland was the 7th state to join the union.
It was settled in 1634 and entered the union on Apr. 28, 1788.
The state capitol is Annapolis
Their nickname is: The Old Line State
Their motto is: strong deeds, gentle words
Origin of state’s name: Named to honor Henrietta Maria, wife of England’s King Charles I
