Alabama – Georgia – US States Number 1 Through 10

ALABAMA – GEORGIA

We have traveled a lot throughout the US and have actually been to 41 of the 50 States. Thus I decided to share some information about each state as well as the state road sign. If we didn’t get to a state sign yet (or forgot to get one while we were there), I have posted another picture of a state sign and will replace it once we have pictures. In the meantime, please enjoy the information on the states from Alabama-Georgia.  FYI, these are in alphabetical order.

State of Alabama

Alabama Flag

A crimson St. Andrew’s cross on a white field, patterned after the Confederate Battle Flag and adopted in 1895. The bars forming the cross must not be less than six inches broad and must extend diagonally across the flag from side to side. Flag adopted in 1895.

Alabama was the 22nd state to join the union.
It was settled in 1702 and entered the union on Dec 14, 1819.
The state capitol is in Montgomery.

Their nickname is: The Yellowhammer State
Their motto is: We Dare Defend Our Rights
Origin of state’s name: Means “tribal town” in the Creek Indian language

State of Alaska

Alaska adopted the flag for official state use in 1959. The blue field represents the sky, the sea, and mountain lakes, as well as Alaska’s wildflowers. Emblazoned on the flag are eight gold stars: seven from the constellation Ursa Major, or the Big Dipper. The eighth is the North Star, representing the northernmost state. Alaska’s flag was designed in 1926 by a 13-year-old Native American boy, Bennie Benson, from the village of Chignik. Bennie received a 1,000-dollar scholarship and a watch for his winning entry in the flag design contest.

Alaska was the 49th state to join the union.
It was first settled in 1741 and entered the union on December 14, 1819.
The state capitol is in Juneau.

Their nickname is: The Last Frontier
Their motto is: North to the Future
Origin of state’s name: Based on an Aleut word alaxsxaq literally meaning “object toward which the action of the sea is directed” or more simply, “the mainland”

State of Arizona

The 13 rays of red and gold on the top half of the flag represent both the 13 original colonies of the Union and the rays of the Western setting sun. Red and gold were also the colors carried by Coronado’s Spanish expedition in search of the Seven Cities of Cibola in 1540. The bottom half of the flag has the same Liberty blue as the United States flag. Since Arizona was the largest producer of copper in the nation, a copper star was placed in the flag’s center. Flag adopted in 1917

Arizona was the 48th state to join the union.
It was settled in 1776 and entered the union on Feb. 14, 1912.
The state capitol is in Phoenix.

Their nickname is: The Grand Canyon State
Their motto is: God enriches
Origin of state’s name: Spanish interpretation of “arizuma,” an Aztec Indian word meaning “silver-bearing.” Also based on Pima Indianword “arizonac” for “little spring place.”

State of Arkansas

A diamond on a red field represents the only place in North America where diamonds have been discovered and mined. The twenty-five white stars around the diamond mean that Arkansas was the twenty-fifth state to join the Union. The top of four stars in the center represents that Arkansas was a member of the Confederate States during the Civil War. The other three stars represent Spain, France, and the United States, countries that had earlier ruled the land that includes Arkansas. Flag adopted 1913

Arkansas was the 25th state to join the union.
It was settled in 1686 and entered the union on June 15, 1836.
The state capitol is in Little Rock

Their nickname is: The Natural State
Their motto is: Regnat Populus – The People Rule
Origin of state’s name: French interpretation of a Sioux word acansa meaning “downstream people”

State of California

Historic Bear Flag was raised at Sonomaon on June 14, 1846, by a group of American settlers in revolt against Mexican rule. The flag was designed by William Todd on a piece of new unbleached cotton. The star imitated the lone star of Texas. A grizzly bear represented the many bears seen in the state. The word, “California Republic” was placed beneath the star and bear. It was adopted by the 1911 State Legislature as the State Flag.

California was the 31st state to join the union.
It was settled in 1769 and entered the union on Sept. 9, 1850.
The state capitol is in Sacramento.

Their nickname is: The Golden State
Their motto is: I have found it
Origin of state’s name: Named by Spanish after Califia, a mythical paradise in a Spanish romance, written by Montalvo in 1510.

State of Colorado

The flag of Colorado consists of three alternate stripes of equal width and at right angles to the staff, the two outer stripes to be blue of the same color as in the blue field of the national flag and the middle stripe to be white, the proportion of the flag is a width of two-thirds of its length. One-fifth of the total length of the flag is a circular red C, of the same color as the red in the national flag of the United States. The diameter of the letter is two-thirds of the width of the flag. The inner line of the opening of the letter C is three-fourths of the width of its body or bar, and the outer line of the opening is double the length of the inner line thereof. Completely filling the open space inside the letter C is a golden disk, attached to the flag is a cord of gold and silver, intertwined, with tassels, one of gold and one of silver. Flag adopted in 1911.

Colorado was the 38th state to join the union.
It was settled in 1858 and entered the union on Aug 1, 1876.
The state capitol is in Denver

Their nickname is: The Centennial State / Colorful Colorado
Their motto is: Nothing without Providence
Origin of state’s name: Taken from the Spanish for the “colorred” and was applied to the Colorado River.

State of Connecticut

On a field of azure blue is an ornamental white shield with three grapevines, each bearing three bunches of purple grapes. The state’s motto “He who Transplanted Sustains Us” is displayed on a white ribbon. The vines stand for the first settlements of English people who began to move from Massachusetts in the 1630s. These settlements were thought of as grapevines that had been transplanted. Flag adopted 1897.

Connecticut was the 5th state to join the union.
It was settled in 1636 and entered the union on January 9, 1788
The state capitol is in Hartford

Their nickname is: The Constitution State
Their motto is: Qui Transtulit Sustinet -He Who Transplanted Still Sustains.
Origin of state’s name: From the Eastern Algonquin Indian word quinnitukqut meaning “at the long tidal river,” referring to the Connecticut River.

State of Delaware

Adopted on July 24, 1913, the Delaware state flag has a background of colonial blue surrounding a diamond of buff color in which the coat of arms of the state is placed. Below the diamond are the words “December 7, 1787,” indicating the day on which Delaware was the first state to ratify the United States constitution. Because of this action, Delaware became the first state in the Union, and is, therefore, accorded the first position in such national events as presidential inaugurations. According to members of the original commission established to design the flag, the shades of buff and colonial blue represent those of the uniform of General George Washington. Inside the diamond, the flag recognizes the importance of commerce {the ship} and agriculture {wheat, corn, the ox and the farmer} to the state. Tribute is also paid to the revolutionary war soldiers. The words in the ribbon banner read Liberty and Independence.

Delaware was the 1st state to join the union.
It was settled in 1631 and entered the union on December 7, 1787.
The state capitol is in Dover.

Their nickname is: The First State
Their motto is:  Liberty and Independence
Origin of state’s name: Named after an early Virginia governor, Lord de la Warr

State of Florida

On a white field emblazoned with a red X and the state seal, Florida’s flag represents the land of sunshine, flowers, palm trees, rivers, and lakes. The seal features a brilliant sun, a cabbage palmetto tree, a steamboat sailing, and a Native American Seminole woman scattering flowers. Flag adopted in 1899.

Florida was the 27th state to join the union.
It was settled in 1565 and entered the union on March 3, 1845.
The state capitol is in Tallahassee.

Their nickname is: The Sunshine State
Their motto is: In God We Trust
Origin of state’s name: Named on Easter 1513 by Ponce de Leonfor Pascua Florida, meaning “Flowery Easter”

State of Georgia

Georgia Flag

The Georgia flag has three red and white stripes and the state coat of arms on a blue field in the upper left corner. Thirteen stars surrounding the seal denote Georgia’s position as one of the original thirteen colonies. On the seal, three pillars supporting an arch represent the three branches of government; legislative, judicial, and executive. A man with a sword drawn is defending the Constitution, whose principles are wisdom, justice, and moderation. The date 1776 represents the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Flag adopted May 8th, 2003.

Georgia was the 4th state to join the union.
It was settled in 1733 and entered the union on Jan. 2, 1788.
The state capitol is in Atlanta.

Their nickname is: The Peach State
Their motto is: Wisdom, justice, and moderation
Origin of state’s name: Named for King George II of England
