Mackinac Island, Michigan – “The Big Turtle”

Mackinac Island - Horses

We had a great time in the upper Peninsula of Michigan in May of 2021 celebrating our anniversary, We saw the beautiful Mackinaw Bridge and saw two lighthouses, White Point and Mc Gulpin. We had a great time seeing these local attractions, but how can you be in the Upper Penisula (UP) and not go to Mackinac Island? Happily, we set aside a day to explore this beautiful little island and I want to share some of it with you all today. Continue reading “Mackinac Island, Michigan – “The Big Turtle””

Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint – Tillamook, Oregon

Cape Meares - 4

While staying at an Airbnb in Beaverton, Oregon in Feb of 2022 we decided to take a short trip west to visit the Tillamook Creamery and the Tillamook Air Museum. Both were interesting but we also wanted to see the ocean again. We drove along the coast for a while and ended up walking around the Cape Meares area. It was a cool and windy day, not surprising that it was in February, but it was a nice day to take a little walk and explore the area and see the lighthouse. McGulpin Point Light – Mackinaw City, Michigan

McGulpin Point - Lighthouse

We had a wonderful trip to several locations in Michigan during our week in May of 2021. I really enjoyed going to a game at Comerica Park in Detroit and seeing the Mackinaw Bridge in Mackinaw City. While in the Mackinaw City area we were able to see about of lighthouses. The first one was Whitefish Point and the one I am sharing today, McGulpin Point Light. Both were very cool but sadly McGulpin was closed. We still had a great time walking around, taking pictures, and learning a little about the lighthouse as well as the area.

Pensacola Beach Florida – Things to do Under the Sun

Pensacola TowerIt has been quite cold here in Colorado lately and I am missing the warmth we had while in Miami, Florida this time last year and did the exciting Everglades Airboat Tour. Sadly, we won’t be back in Florida until maybe later this year.  However while talking to a friend about Florida it made me start thinking about a trip to Florida in May of 2011, when we spent time part of a week playing in the Pensacola area.  Unlike Miami, in Pensacola you will find miles of white sand beaches, but they stretch along the Gulf of Mexico. We enjoyed our time swimming and playing in these crystal clear waters.

Whitefish Point Shipwreck Museum and Lighthouse

Whitefish Point 1 We recently got back from a week in the beautiful state of Michigan. We have now been to 44 states. 🙂 Anyway, while in the state we had a blast exploring the Detroit area as well as the Upper Peninsula. We had an amazing view of Lake Huron from our room in Mackinaw City, where we could also see part of the Mackinaw Bridge. Another perk was that we could walk out onto the beach just a few steps from our porch. While in the area Gene wanted to check out the Shipwreck Museum up in Whitefish Point. I was more than eager, as I wanted to see the Whitefish Point Lighthouse. It was about an hour and ½ from where we were so it wasn’t too bad and the drive was beautiful.

St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum – Florida

Augustine Lighthouse 1I have been intrigued by lighthouses for a long time, thus I was very happy to be able to go and see the St. Augustine Lighthouse when we were in Northern Florida in May of 1999.  The St. Augustine Lighthouse is located on the north end of Anastasia Island, was built in 1874, and is the most recent of a number of towers built in the area. It is truly incredible.    Continue reading “St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum – Florida”

Hilton Head, SC – Coligny Beach Park and Harbour Town Island

Hilton HeadI was incredibly happy to be able to spend New Year’s Eve of 2019/2020 in Hilton Head South Carolina. We had been to South Carolina once before to see their state capitol building, but never to Hilton Head, so I was so excited. I didn’t know much about Hilton Head, aka Hilton Head Island, or that it was named after Captain William Hilton. In 1663 he was the person who identified a headland near the entrance to Port Royal Sound, which mapmakers named “Hilton’s Headland.” Continue reading “Hilton Head, SC – Coligny Beach Park and Harbour Town Island”
