Serendipity 3 – Upper East Side New York Restaurant

Serendipity - OutsideWhile in New York City we ate a quite a few nice restaurants, but there was one that I really had wanted to visit while in the city, Serendipity 3. I had heard a lot about this renowned Upper Eastside restaurant and thought it would be fun to visit and try one of their famous Frozen Hot Chocolate drinks.  I have to say I love their definition of Serendipity: the art of making happy discoveries or finding the unexpectedly pleasant by chance or sagacity.  They also state that they are more than a mere coffee shop, more of an ice cream parlor on steroids, Serendipity has been synonymous with fun. Since September 14, 1954, its menu of outrageous desserts and fun food, served in a Manhattan townhouse amid exuberant Victorian decorations, has charmed children and their parents, not to mention celebrities from  Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol, and Beyonce. Sadly we didn’t see any famous people while we were there, but we did have a great time with a New Yorker friend that I use to work with. American Girl Place in Manhattan, New York – Adorable Tiny Dolls

American Girl Place - BldgI was talking with a friend the other day who was trying to find a specific doll for her granddaughter’s upcoming birthday. It immediately reminded me of the miniature dolls I saw at the American Girl Place store while in Manhattan in October of 2015. Gene, a local friend, and I checked out their amazing store when we were in Manhattan last year. We had been to the Empire State Building, and Rockefeller Plaza earlier that day and saw this place while we were walking around. Not sure why I actually walked into the store, except maybe that my niece just had a baby and she looks like a tiny little doll.  Then again, I am probably biased, lol. Some of it may have been pure curiosity as I had never seen one in person. Whatever the reason, probably multiple reasons,  I loved seeing these little 18 inch dolls and decided to share our experience looking around the store. East River Bridges – Eight Manhattan Bridges That Span The East River

East River Bridges - 1I love all the crime scene dramas set in New York City such as Castle, Law and Order, Blue Bloods, Elementary, and Person of Interest. When I started this post several years ago (and sadly forgot about it) I was going through summer hiatus withdrawals and was watching re-runs of Blue Bloods. I am always fascinated with the various New York Bridges during these opening credits and started wondering which bridges they were. Thus, I decided to do some research and find out which bridges we want to see while on our first trip to New York City.  I was amazed at how many bridges there actually were in the Manhattan area. There are quite many but I decided to stick with the main eight that cross the East River. With that said, here are the East River Bridges that I found the most captivating and that I wanted to see when we visited the city. They are in no particular order. NYC Christmas Videos – Top Things To Do in NYC at Christmas

NYC Christmas 1

NYC Christmas Visit

The holidays are upon us and I have to say, I LOVE CHRISTMAS! I love the lights, the music, the food, and especially the meaning of Christmas. They are always exciting, but Christmas of 2018 was especially epic. We were happy to be able to experience the NYC Christmas season in mid-December!  We couldn’t wait to see the lights, trees, window decorations, and everything NYC is known for during Christmas. I was not disappointed. It was more than I thought it would be. The tree at Rockefeller Center is something you HAVE to make sure to see while in the area. Staten Island Ferry – Free Manhattan to Staten Island Ferry

Staten Island Ferry 1The free 24-hour Staten Island Ferry is considered by many New Yorkers as a lifeline for making their way from NYC’s southernmost borough, but it also has some of the finest views in the world. From the ferry, you can see the Governors Island to the east and Ellis Island and Lady Liberty to the west, as the Manhattan skyline recedes in the vessel’s wake. Sounds like something that is definitely worth the price of admission, lol

Tenement Museum – Immigrants Lives Past and Present

Tenement 1We had a great time while seeing Manhattan, and New York, all decked out for Christmas in December of 2018. We really enjoyed seeing the beautiful tree at Rockefeller Center and had a marvelous time shopping at the Union Square Holiday Market. One thing we ended up doing was taking a tour of something I didn’t even know existed. Yes, I am now hanging my head in shame, but I know now. Anyway, after meeting some friends for lunch at Katz’s Deli for lunch, we headed over to the Tenement Museum. It is located at 97 and 103 Orchard Street which is only a few blocks from where we were. It was a pleasant walk, and we stopped into a few shops along the way. As I said, I didn’t know it was there, but apparently it is a National Historic Site that opened on November 12, 1988. The two historical tenement buildings were home to an estimated 15,000 people, from over 20 nations, between 1863 and 2011. The Tenement Museum, which includes a visitors’ center, promotes tolerance and a historical perspective on the immigrant experience. I didn’t know what to expect, so I went in completely open to learning some history. Continue reading “Tenement Museum – Immigrants Lives Past and Present”

Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, New York – A NYC Must See

Rockefeller Center-1In October of 2015 we able to take our first trip to New York City and finally see Rockefeller Center and Plaza, as well as the Skating Rink. It was a little too early for the Christmas tree, but it was still incredible. What I didn’t realize was how large the area is. It is located in the center of Midtown Manhattan, spanning the area between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue, and is a complex of 19 commercial buildings covering 22 acres.  I also didn’t know that it was declared a New York City Landmark on April 23, 1985, and a National Historic Landmark on December 23, 1987. The Brooklyn Bridge – Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York

Brooklyn Bridge-1December of 2018 Gene and I we were lucky enough to spend a week in New York. It was magical and I loved seeing the city all decked out for Christmas. The sights and sounds were amazing. It is something you can really describe. You just have to experience it yourself if you haven’t. Anyway, since it was our second trip to New York and decided to explore a little and headed out to take some pictures of the Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge. I love bridges and this was a highlight on my list that we didn’t get much of a chance to do the last time we were in NYC. So we some searching and found that the best place to see both of these was at a place called Brooklyn Bridge Park in the DUMBO neighborhood. Recently I shared a post with some pictures and history of the Manhattan Bridge. Today I am going to do the same for the more famous Brooklyn Bridge. They are both beautiful and unique in their own way. Continue reading “The Brooklyn Bridge – Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York”

St Patricks Cathedral in Manhattan NY – America’s Parish Church

St Patricks - FrontWhile running around Midtown one day in October 2015, we ended up near St Patricks Cathedral. This prominent Catholic church, and landmark, in New York, is decorated in Neo-Gothic-style Roman, and it is beautiful. One of my aunts, and my best friend, are both Catholic, and I have been to Mass with both of them at several different churches. However, I have never been in one as grand as this. To say it is gorgeous would be an understatement. It is absolutely stunning. If you are at Rockefeller  Center, it is very close. It is definitely worth heading over to see before you leave the area.
