South Carolina State House in Columbia – The Palmetto State

South Carolina State House - 1

One our desire to see all US State Capitols we marked off the South Carolina State Capitol while in the Columbia area in June of 2012. We had just done a tour earlier of the Georgia State Capitol and I was looking forward to comparing the two. This capitol, most commonly known as The South Carolina State House, is located in the center of Columbia and lies at the confluence of the Saluda River and Broad River which merge at Columbia to form the Congaree River. It was there that in 1860, the South Carolina Secession Convention took place and their delegates voted for secession, making South Carolina the first state to leave the Union in the events leading up to the Civil War. I was looking forward to exploring this historic capitol building. Continue reading “South Carolina State House in Columbia – The Palmetto State”

White Water Rafting – Six White Water Rivers to Paddle this Summer!

White Water RaftingI have always loved the water but forgot how much until I was working on my Beach, Mountains, or Best of Both Worlds post. It made me stop, reflect, and acknowledge that it has been too long since I hit the beach or a stream. It also saddened me to realize that I have never been White Water Rafting. That is unless you count the Big Foot Rapids ride at Knott’s Berry Farm, which I don’t. lol It was fun and all, but I would love to experience the real thing one day. With that in mind, I did some research and found 6 rivers that I would love to explore via rafting.  I am going to start with the Salmon River in Idaho. Hilton Head, SC – Coligny Beach Park and Harbour Town Island

Hilton HeadI was incredibly happy to be able to spend New Year’s Eve of 2019/2020 in Hilton Head South Carolina. We had been to South Carolina once before to see their state capitol building, but never to Hilton Head, so I was so excited. I didn’t know much about Hilton Head, aka Hilton Head Island, or that it was named after Captain William Hilton. In 1663 he was the person who identified a headland near the entrance to Port Royal Sound, which mapmakers named “Hilton’s Headland.” Continue reading “Hilton Head, SC – Coligny Beach Park and Harbour Town Island”

Middleton Place Plantation – Charleston, South Carolina

Middleton Place - HouseLast New Year’s we were in Hilton Head, SC, and had an amazing time. After the new year celebration was over, we headed to Charleston to visit one of my high school friends. We had been to South Carolina before to see the state capitol, but had never really explored the area. I have to say, it is absolutely gorgeous. Our hosts showed us a great time and were wonderful tour guides. J One of the places that they took us was to see the Middleton Place Plantation. We had been to Monticello in Virginia before, so I had a small idea of what to expect, but this place was way more than I was expecting.
