As you may have seen from some of my posts on my blog here, as well as on other social media sites, Gene and I enjoy trying different craft breweries when we travel. One such place we really enjoyed is called the Oregon Public House in Springfield, Oregon. Not only did we enjoy some local brew, but the place is quite unique in itself. A little bit more about that in a bit. This place was one of the closest places to the Airbnb we were staying at during our visit in September of 2021. As it was the closest, we decided to check it out the first night we were there. We enjoyed it so much that we went back several times while in the area. Living in Denver, we have now been to Rapid City, South Dakota several times to visit such landmarks as Mount Rushmore National Monument, Crazy Horse Memorial. and the Badlands National Park. While visiting these attractions are always exciting, another fun part of traveling is trying new restaurants. Thus, we always like to try some non-chain restaurants or at least chains that are not in our area. Of course, we had to hit a few of those while out and about but we were able to find a few unique restaurants. Here are four Rapid City restaurants that I decided I would like to share from some of our visits. Hope you enjoy reading about these and try them the next time you find yourself in the area. Did the title make you hungry? I was feeling hungry when we visited the Pizza Hut Museum in Wichita on our recent trip to Kansas in March of 2022, lol. In all seriousness, this was a great museum and so glad we were able to do a self-guided tour of this small little building that was the original Pizza Hut location. It has since been moved and is now located on the campus of Wichita State University. Even though it is small, it is packed with information and history about the Pizza Hut brand. Here is their story.
While in New York City we ate a quite a few nice restaurants, but there was one that I really had wanted to visit while in the city, Serendipity 3. I had heard a lot about this renowned Upper Eastside restaurant and thought it would be fun to visit and try one of their famous Frozen Hot Chocolate drinks. I have to say I love their definition of Serendipity: the art of making happy discoveries or finding the unexpectedly pleasant by chance or sagacity. They also state that they are more than a mere coffee shop, more of an ice cream parlor on steroids, Serendipity has been synonymous with fun. Since September 14, 1954, its menu of outrageous desserts and fun food, served in a Manhattan townhouse amid exuberant Victorian decorations, has charmed children and their parents, not to mention celebrities from Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol, and Beyonce. Sadly we didn’t see any famous people while we were there, but we did have a great time with a New Yorker friend that I use to work with. When you talk to people about Casa Bonita in Lakewood, CO there are usually mixed reviews. However, it is still something everyone spending time in Colorado wants to experience at least once. My nieces and nephews had heard of Casa Bonita from South Park but had no idea that it was real. When my niece and nephews were visiting us here in CO and found out it was a real place, we had to go. So after a day of playing at the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, we stopped in for dinner on our way back. Continue reading “Casa Bonita – Entertainment in Lakewood, CO”
As we get ready to celebrate Valentines’ day, it made me start thinking about some of our Valentine’s celebrations in the past. Since Gene was working nights for quite a few years we tried to take a 3-day weekend somewhere to just get away and enjoy some time together. Happily in February of 2015, we spent three days in Amarillo and had a blast. Dinner on Valentine’s evening found us at the famous Big Texan Steak Ranch. While in Bismark North Dakota checking our their State Capitol Building, we ate at a few restaurants that were out of this world! I will start with the our favorite Bismark food place – Space Aliens Grill & Bar, where Earthlings are welcome. We walked in and immediately felt like we were in a different galaxy. The décor features a 30-foot-high domed ceiling that displays a view of outer space. A force field of alien sculptures in the dining room, bar and arcade, showcase a variety of extraterrestrial settings and distinct personalities, encouraging each earthling to relax and enjoy the moment. It was a great atmosphere, lol. Continue reading “Bismark Food Experiences in North Dakota – They are Out of This World”
A few years ago we joined the Hyatt Reward program and have enjoyed using it a few times. Just for signing up, we received two free nights, which was great. After some debate, in October of 2015, we decided to use them in one of the most exciting places, NYC. While in NY, we spent two amazing nights at the Andaz on 5th Avenue right across from the Stephen Schwarzman Library. While we have stayed at three different properties since we joined their program, and found each one wonderful and quite unique, there was just something special about the Andaz.
