Rapid City, South Dakota – My Top 7 Free Things on Our to-do List

Rapid City 1We have had a few fun times exploring Rapid City, South Dakota and the area since living here in CO. Of course we had to do the big attractions like Mount Rushmore, and Crazy Horse, but we also look forward to doing some more historical and local attractions on our next trip in May of 2022. With a budget in mind, I also wanted to do a few free things while in the area. Thus I did some research and found 7 free things around Rapid City that I think would be fun to do. Here is my list (alphabetically): Continue reading “Rapid City, South Dakota – My Top 7 Free Things on Our to-do List”

Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, New York – A NYC Must See

Rockefeller Center-1In October of 2015 we able to take our first trip to New York City and finally see Rockefeller Center and Plaza, as well as the Skating Rink. It was a little too early for the Christmas tree, but it was still incredible. What I didn’t realize was how large the area is. It is located in the center of Midtown Manhattan, spanning the area between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue, and is a complex of 19 commercial buildings covering 22 acres.  I also didn’t know that it was declared a New York City Landmark on April 23, 1985, and a National Historic Landmark on December 23, 1987. Stone Mountain and Laser Show in Atlanta, Georgia

Stone Mountain - FlagsOn a trip to Atlanta to see some friends and visit the World of Coca-Cola and Centennial Olympic Park, we went to Stone Mountain. It was summer, June 2012, so there were quite a few activities going on, including a laser light show in the evening.  For those of you who have not heard of this place (I hadn’t before our trip), it is a major recreational area in Atlanta, with 3,200 acres of wooded parkland and lakes. In the center of this massive park is a  monument to the Confederacy.  There is a carving on the huge monument which depicts three Confederate figures during the Civil War: Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis. carved out by Gutzon Borglum, the same person who carved Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.  Thought that was pretty interesting. Mount Rushmore in Keystone, South Dakota – A Historical Landmark

Mount Rushmore 1I found it very appropriate that I created this post the day before the 4th of July about a monument that pays homage to four great American Presidents, Mount Rushmore.  Here is a link to their website with more info. This has been a place I have wanted to see for a really long time. Thus I was extremely excited to finally get to see how amazing and grand it really is in person. Pictures and movies don’t do justice to their size and detail. You have to see it first hand to really appreciate its beauty, and what a monumental endeavor it was to create the monument.
