Mackinac Island, Michigan – “The Big Turtle”

Mackinac Island - Horses

We had a great time in the upper Peninsula of Michigan in May of 2021 celebrating our anniversary, We saw the beautiful Mackinaw Bridge and saw two lighthouses, White Point and Mc Gulpin. We had a great time seeing these local attractions, but how can you be in the Upper Penisula (UP) and not go to Mackinac Island? Happily, we set aside a day to explore this beautiful little island and I want to share some of it with you all today. Continue reading “Mackinac Island, Michigan – “The Big Turtle””

McGulpin Point Light – Mackinaw City, Michigan

McGulpin Point - Lighthouse

We had a wonderful trip to several locations in Michigan during our week in May of 2021. I really enjoyed going to a game at Comerica Park in Detroit and seeing the Mackinaw Bridge in Mackinaw City. While in the Mackinaw City area we were able to see about of lighthouses. The first one was Whitefish Point and the one I am sharing today, McGulpin Point Light. Both were very cool but sadly McGulpin was closed. We still had a great time walking around, taking pictures, and learning a little about the lighthouse as well as the area.

Comerica Park in Detroit, MI – Home of the Detroit Tigers

Comerica Park - Main Gate

On my continued quest to visit all 30 MLB ballparks, in this post, I am going to share our visit to Comerica Park. We were in Michigan in May of 2021 and spent the first part of the trip seeing the beautiful Mackinaw Bridge near the Upper Peninsula. It was beautiful and enjoyed it there, but after our time there, we headed to Detroit for a few days. The main thing I wanted to visit while in the area was catch a game at a park I had never been to, and watch the Tigers play at their home park. It is a lovely park and it was a beautiful day. Even though it may have been a little windy at times, it kept it from getting too hot. It was a great day to catch a game. Michigan State Capitol in Lansing – The Great Lakes State

Michigan State Capitol - FrontIn May of 2021, we were happy to be able to stop in and do a tour of the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing, Michigan on our way back to Detroit after seeing the beautiful Mackinaw Bridge and Mackinaw Island. I am not exactly sure which state number this is, but we are close to 30-35 I think. Anyway, it is a beautiful capitol and I am happy we were able to take a tour.

Mackinaw Bridge – Spanning the Straits of Mackinac

Mackinaw-Bridge-4As those of you who have followed my blog for a while, you probably know I really loved bridges.  Not sure exactly why I do, but I do, lol. Today I want to share some information and pictures about the beautiful Mackinaw Bridge. We were able to travel across it while in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for our anniversary in May of this year. I had heard of this bridge for many years, and couldn’t wait to see it in person. It didn’t disappoint J It is/was beautiful. Before I tell you a little bit about our visit, let me give you some history about the bridge itself.

Whitefish Point Shipwreck Museum and Lighthouse

Whitefish Point 1 We recently got back from a week in the beautiful state of Michigan. We have now been to 44 states. 🙂 Anyway, while in the state we had a blast exploring the Detroit area as well as the Upper Peninsula. We had an amazing view of Lake Huron from our room in Mackinaw City, where we could also see part of the Mackinaw Bridge. Another perk was that we could walk out onto the beach just a few steps from our porch. While in the area Gene wanted to check out the Shipwreck Museum up in Whitefish Point. I was more than eager, as I wanted to see the Whitefish Point Lighthouse. It was about an hour and ½ from where we were so it wasn’t too bad and the drive was beautiful.

Lake Havasu Arizona – The 24 Lighthouse Replicas on the Lake

Lake HavasuLake Havasu currently claims the title of “the city with most lighthouses in America,” and thanks to the Lake Havasu Lighthouse Club, Arizona someday could surpass Michigan as the state with the most lighthouses. Arizona? Really? In the middle of the desert is not a place you would think of when you think of lighthouses.  However, if you have been to Lake Havasu you may have seen the 24 replica of famous lighthouses from the East Coast, West Coast and the Great Lakes area.

Willis Tower and Our Skydeck Experience – Chicago

Willis-Tower-Building

During our travels, we have been to the top of a few tall buildings such as the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building, the Space Needle, and the Vancouver Lookout Tower at Harbour Center in Vancouver. Thus when we were in Chicago in June of 2016, we had to go up to the top of Willis Tower. I will continue to call it by that name on this post, but not without saying first that it will always be the Sears Tower for me.  All right, now that I got that off my chest, I wanted to say, we had a great time on our visit.  Apparently we are not alone in wanting to see the phenomenal views, because it was stated that approximately 1.5 million tourists visit the Skydeck each year. On a side note, the Skydeck Experience opened on June 22, 1974. Continue reading “Willis Tower and Our Skydeck Experience – Chicago”
